How to Pay for a Doula: What You Need to Know
Welcoming a new baby is one of the most exciting times in life—but it can also come with a lot of questions, especially when it comes to navigating the cost of support like doulas. At KLR Baby, we believe every family deserves compassionate, expert care during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. That’s why we’ve worked hard to make our services as accessible and affordable as possible.
Here’s a guide to help you understand how you can pay for a doula—and how KLR Baby can support you in the process.
1. Use Your HSA/FSA Funds
Good news! KLR Baby has accepted Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) since day one. If you have one of these accounts through your employer, you can use pre-tax dollars to pay for doula services. Just check with your account provider for any documentation requirements, and we’re happy to provide receipts or any supporting materials you need.
2. Submit a Superbill to Your Insurance
KLR Baby provides superbills—detailed invoices that you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. While not all insurance plans cover doula care yet, some do, and more are starting to follow suit. Since Medicaid began covering doulas in July 2024, there’s increasing momentum for private insurers to do the same. If you're unsure, give your insurance provider a call to ask if doula services are eligible for coverage or partial reimbursement.
3. Medicaid is Now Covering Doulas
As of July 2024, Medicaid now covers doula care in many states, marking a big step forward in maternal health support. We’re excited to share that KLR Baby has applied to be an approved Medicaid provider—so stay tuned for updates. This change means that even more families can receive professional birth support at little or no cost.
4. Check Your Employee Benefits (Think Carrot & More)
Many companies are expanding their family-building and wellness benefits. Programs like Carrot Fertility, Progyny, and other HR-supported wellness perks may include reimbursement for doula care. Be sure to ask your HR department or benefits manager if you have access to any of these programs. You might be surprised at what’s available!

At KLR Baby, we want every family to feel supported—not just emotionally and physically, but financially too. Whether you're using an HSA, seeking Medicaid approval, or exploring employer benefits, we’re here to guide you through the process.
